Our Mission

The Internet Safety Wiki is a first-of-its-kind wiki community. We're committed to helping families make the most of the positive aspects of the Internet while combatting the bad stuff. Simply put, the Internet contains too much junk. Problems arise when we have to wade through a sea of garbage to find the relevant and uplifting matter—for a report, for leisure, or for any other reason. Our mission is to make sifting through the filth easier.

As the creators of the Internet Safety Wiki, we hope to educate and empower individuals and families everywhere about the dangers of the Internet. We strongly believe that through heightened awareness of the unsavory by-products of technology, we can protect ourselves and our children from online predators, identity theft, pornography, and anything else out there.

History

The Internet Safety Wiki was founded in 2007 by Dr. Charles Knutson of the Brigham Young University Computer Science Department. He and hundreds of student volunteers have written and edited articles since that time. More recently, Dr. Knutson's students have helped develop other areas of the ISP—such as our podcast (the number-one Web safety podcast on both the Internet and iTunes), our Facebook page, and our Twitter feed.

How You Can Help

You can help by writing articles for the Wiki. We're 500 articles strong and looking to increase that number exponentially. It's tech-savvy, caring individuals like you who can really help the Wiki flourish. If you've got a few minutes, look through the Wiki and see what you can add or clean up. Even the smallest contribution helps!

As the Internet Safety Wiki project continues to blossom, we welcome the contributions of anyone and everyone who shares our vision. Like any good wiki, we know this project will require extensive reading, editing, and revising to create the a complete, extensive, and accurate powerhouse of useful info. Want to make a difference? What Makes the Internet Safety Wiki Different From Other Web Safety Sites?

At present, hundreds of organizations are working to remove unnecessary evils from the Internet. However, these organizations tend to specialize: one site may be about pornography addiction, another about cyberbullying, and yet another about identity theft. These are all great sites, even on their own, but wouldn't it be great if someone harnessed them all together into one big technology safety network?

Enter the Internet Safety Wiki.

The Internet Safety Wiki's position can be seen at the center of this scatterplot of Net safety resources. Our articles synthesize other sites' content into short and sweet articles written in plain English. That way, you can get the information you need by visiting one quick website instead of seventy four. We also make an effort to link to other good Web safety sites as much as possible in our articles, thereby connecting hundreds of great websites into one strong, effective, and unified endeavor.

The Internet Safety Wiki is also committed to applauding and promoting organizations, businesses, programs, and products that help keep families safe on the Web. If you feel that you or your company has a product our readers would like to know about, feel free to build yourself an article and promote your services. Unlike other wikis, we encourage you to use our wiki to advertise and to share what you've done to make the Internet safer.

Where We're Headed

We're very excited about the coming new web layout for the wiki and the Internet Safety Project as a whole. We don't know exactly when you'll see it, but it will be soon and it will be awesome! The crisp, clean, classy look will better represent the quality of our efforts.
